Michael Westen, a spy, receives a "burn notice" from work. His job does not fire people; rather, they issue a burn notice to let the agent know their services are no longer required. Michael does not know what happened to cause this change of events in his life. Michael returns to his roots in Miami, taking on local cases for people the police cannot help — Michael helps a man clear his name after a valuable pieces of art and jewellery are stolen.

A drug dealer makes a mistake when someone witnesses him beating up an associate. Michael tries to get the witness out of Miami, but is hindered by the woman's teenage daughter. His plans obstructed, Mike attempts to mess with the drug dealer and his cartel.

A friend of Michael requests assistance in freeing his daughter from a prostitution ring. Meanwhile, Michael must protect himself from repeated assassination attempts.

Michael infiltrates a family of gunrunners after they threaten an airport supervisor, hoping to scare them off. Meanwhile, the FBI are putting pressure on Sam to gather more information about Michael.

Michael retrieves a boat from Jamaican gangsters and discovers $10 million dollars hidden onboard. Meanwhile, a CSS agent urges Michael to stop his investigation into who burned him.

Sam takes on a case for a woman named Gillian, who is being blackmailed into using her security clearance to help smuggle heroin into the United States. Meanwhile, Michael is busy trying to arrange a meeting with Philip Cowan. // Michael must rescue Sam from heroin smugglers, who happen to be ex-Special Forces. Meanwhile, Michael tries to avoid agents who are out to get him.
