When She Was Bad

Willow and Xander are thoroughly bored, until they are attacked by the first vampire to be seen all summer. They are saved by the first Buffy Summers to be seen all summer, back from her Los Angeles holiday, and in a very bad mood. The next night, Buffy has a vision of the Master killing her, brought on by the Anointed One planning to resurrect the Master. Members of the Scooby Gang are kidnapped by the Anointed One's gang, who intends to raise the Master by draining their blood over his bones. Xander is the only one spared, and tells Buffy it was her fault they were taken. Buffy, Angel and Xander charge in to the rescue, and Buffy destroys the Master once and for all by crushing his bones.

Some Assembly Required

A dug-up grave in a cemetery turns out to be not an isolated incident -- bodies of girls in traffic accidents are being dug up. The culprits are two high-school science geniuses, who are mixing body parts to create a stay-at-home companion for a brother raised from the dead. Cordelia, who once had a crush on the brother, is kidnapped for her head. The Scoobies arrive in time to end the grotesque plan.

School Hard

Something is rotten in the state of Sunnydale High. If you're Buffy. She's one step from expulsion, her GPA is a disaster and Parent's Night is in a few days time. That's the badness she knows about. The Night of St. Vigeous is approaching, when the power of all vampires will be at its peak. All that, however, is the good news. There's two new faces in town. One of them's under a bleach blond haircut and over a black leather trenchcoat, the other's in front of a criminally insane clairvoyant brain: Spike and Drusilla. Spike decides to crash Parent's Night, which actually does Buffy a favor, since she's trying her best to keep her mother, Joyce, from Principal Snyder. Spike nearly gets the better of Buffy till Joyce brains him with a fire axe. Women! Later, Spike kills the Anointed One, and sets up shop as ruler of Sunnydale. After he and Dru see what's on television, of course.

Inca Mummy Girl

Sunnydale High students are on a field trip to a museum exhibiting a mummified Incan girl. A joker stays behind after hours to steal the seal that the mummy has in her grip. When he accidentally breaks the artifact, the mummy girl pulls him into the casket and sucks up his life. After overhearing about the foreign exchange student Buffy is expecting, the mummy goes to the Sunnydale Bus Depot to assume his identity. The 500-year-old girl becomes Ampada. Xander falls head over heels for the Latin beauty. Ampada tells Giles that the man on the seal with a knife represents a bodyguard. When Xander and Ampada are hanging out, the bodyguard appears again. A shaken Ampada urges Giles to destroy the seal. She is attacked in the ladies' room but sucks the bodyguard dry. Xander takes her to the dance, but she starts to shrivel again. She runs off mid-dance to look for another life to suck. Xander tracks her down and kisses her; he passes out. Meanwhile, Buffy and Giles finds out the truth. Giles goes to the museum to reassemble the seal while Buffy races to the dance. At the museum, Buffy saves Giles, Xander saves Willow. Ampada crumbles.

Reptile Boy

Buffy is frustrated by Angel's lack of initiative in furthering their relationship. She is also burdened by Giles's training. To escape, she lies to Giles to go to a frat party with Cordelia. They are drugged and about to be sacrificed to a demon when the gang arrives to free them. Buffy releases herself and kills the demon.

Halloween

Sunnydale teens are turned into their costume personas on Halloween night after patronizing a store run by the insidious Ethan Rayne, who has a dark history with Giles. Willow becomes a ghost, Xander a soldier and Buffy a helpless 17th-century noblewoman. Spike cannot be more pleased.

Lie to Me

Buffy spies Angel talking to Drusilla in a playground, but mistakes it for kissing. The next day, she finds Billy "Ford" Fordham, her fifth-grade crush, at Sunnydale High. Xander and Angel are jealous. At night, Ford sees Buffy stake a vampire, but he already knows she is the Slayer. Unbeknownst to Buffy, Ford has cut a deal with Spike: he will be made a vampire in exchange for giving up Buffy. Spike brings Dru along, but she is held hostage and Spike is forced to let Buffy go. The next night, Ford rises as a vampire and is staked by Buffy

The Dark Age

An old childhood friend of Giles appears, only to die. It is revealed that an old demon from Giles' shady teenage past is haunting him and Ethan Rayne. The demon possesses Ms. Calendar, and is defeated by Angel.

What's My Line Part I

Spike, wishing to end matters with Buffy, calls in the Order of Taraka, an ancient order of assassins working each in their own manner. A yet unidentified character imprisons Angel in a room which will be flooded with sunlight come morning. Buffy, searching for Angel in his apartment eventually falls asleep there. She is awakened by the same character attacking her and identifying herself as "Kendra, the Vampire Slayer."

What's My Line Part II

Buffy is attacked by a gun-happy Assassin at Career Fair, while Xander and Cordelia are cornered in Buffy's basement by a salesman-cum-mealworms. The unlikely couple kiss after a heated argument. Meanwhile, Giles learns that Spike has captured Drusilla's sire, it seems that come midnight, Angel could be sacrificed to restore Drusilla to health. After they all escape their ordeals, the Scooby Gang storm the church in which the ritual is to take place. They free Angel and leave Drusilla and Spike for dead. But Drusilla is restored and rescues Spike from the burning building. Kendra goes back to her Watcher with a keepsake from Buffy.

Ted

Buffy returns from a night out with Xander and Willow to find Joyce kissing a man called Ted. Ted turns out to be charm personified, baking superbly, which impresses everyone but Buffy. She's having parental issues, fearing Ted is trying to take over as her Father. Ted takes the Gang and Joyce to mini-golf, where he and Buffy have an unpleasant confrontation over the rules of that great sport. Cordy and Xander continue to illicitly smooch in school broom cupboards. Buffy decides to spy on Ted, but he finds out, and hits Buffy. She goes ballistic, and kicks him down the stairs, where he lands and breaks his neck. Buffy is questioned by the police. Giles saves Jenny's life while patrolling, and some trust is re-established. Ted then turns out to be a homicidal robot, who has married and killed four women before. Ted attempts to kidnap Joyce, but is defeated by a skillet-toting Buffy.

Bad Eggs

Buffy's Mom-sponsored shopping trip to the mall is interrupted by Lyle Gorch, one of two vampire brothers from the Wild Wild West. The next day in school, Xander and Cordelia continue to keep their relationship secret, and the class are given raw eggs to look after as an exercise in responsibility. The eggs are not chickenspawn, but contain mind-possessing facehugger creatures which are taking over the school. Xander avoids being taken, by the simple expedient of boiling his egg to make it easier to look after. Buffy stabs her facehugger with a pair of scissors. The rest of the gang are taken, and knock the two of them out. There is a giant Bezoar demon under the school, which is laying the eggs. Buffy and Xander fight their way into the chamber where the Bezoar lives, but the Gorch brothers arrive as well, and fight some of the possessed as well. Tector Gorch is eaten by the Bezoar, Buffy kills it and Lyle wisely bugs out.

Surprise

The Scoobies are planning a surprise birthday for Buffy's 17th birthday. Willow is asked by Oz on a date, but is reminded of the party after promising him she will agree. She invites him to the party. Drusilla also has a birthday, and Spike plans to reassemble The Judge for her. The ancient demon would destroy humanity. One of the pieces Spike arranged to be shipped to Sunnydale is intercepted by Buffy, however, as Ms. Calendar drives her to the surprise party. Buffy slays the vampires transporting an arm of The Judge and crashes through the wall and into her party. Oz, surprised, is told that vampires exist and find that would "explain a lot." Jenny, who was revealed earlier in the episode to be Janna of the Kalderash tribe (the gypsies who cursed Angel with a soul), takes advantage of the situation by sending Angel to hide the arm in the farthest corner of the earth. As Buffy and Angel say their goodbye at the docks, Spike's vampires attack them and steal the arm. Returning empty-handed, they decide to go to the factory where Drusilla is having her party. There, they find the judge fully assembled and narrowly escape with their life. Angel and Buffy end up at Angel's apartment drenched. They have sex. While Buffy sleeps contented afterwards, Angel finds himself kneeling on his knees outside, crying out Buffy's name in the heavy storm in pain and fear.

Innocence

After sleeping with Buffy the previous night, Angel escapes into the alley with a piercing pain in his heart. In the drenching rain and thundering storm, he realizes that he is losing his soul. When a prostitute tries to help him, he kills her. Angel leaves for the factory, where Spike and Drusilla are pleased to find the Judge has no effect on him. While researching how to battle the Judge, which "no weapon forged can stop," Xander and Cordelia share another kiss behind the bookcase and are caught by the already suspicious Willow. She runs out of the library, distraught that he obviously found Cordelia more attractive. Then Xander remembers something from his time as a soldier in Halloween. It is revealed that his session with Buffy gave Angel "one moment of true happiness." It cost him his soul and caused him to revert to Angelus. The gang go to the army depot, where Xander uses another piece of his army knowledge to steal a heavy weapon. Waiting outside, Oz senses that Willow still has feelings for Xander, and will not kiss her to make Xander jealous, but will kiss her when the right moment comes. The gang arrive at the Sunnydale shopping mall just as the Judge begins zapping people. Xander hands Buffy "the best present ever," a rocket launcher. Angel and Drusilla jump off the platform just before Buffy fries the ignorant Judge. Buffy chases Angel, but cannot bring herself to kill him.

Phases

Willow is worried because Oz hasn't tried to make a move on her yet. Xander and Cordy are making big with the smoochies in her car, when they suffer a case of lupus interuptus. There's a werewolf in town, and tracking it is Gib Cain, an unreconstructed great white hunter. That night, Buffy and Giles track the wolf, but run into Cain instead. He tells them the werewolf is attracted to sexual tension, so Buffy goes to the Bronze to try and capture it. There, she sees the beast, but it escapes. It goes to the woods to sleep, and awakens the next morning as a bemused Oz. Larry complains of being bitten by a huge dog the previous week, which makes the gang think that he is the wolf, so Xander confronts him, but finds out instead that Larry is gay. Willow is still concerned that Oz doesn't like her, so she goes to his house that night. He wolfs out and chases her, but Buffy arrives with a tranquilizer gun, which Willow shoots him with. Willow and Oz (later, as a human) finally kiss.

Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered

Cordelia decides to dump Xander when her friends mock her. Xander retaliates by attempting a love spell.

Passion

Buffy approaches Ms. Calendar at the school and tells her that Giles missed her. Giles tells Jenny that he needs no apologies. To make up for her actions, Jenny manages to translate the spell to restore a vampire's soul with her computer, but Drusilla has sensed the plan. She and Angelus force the plan out of the magic shop, and Angel finds Jenny working alone in her classroom. She tells him she can save him, but he refuses. She slips a floppy disk beside the desk before fleeing Angelus and a chase around the school ensues. Angelus catches her, and snaps her neck in one brutal move. He lays her out at Giles' home in an elaborate, romantic manner that demonstrates his sick viciousness. The Scoobies are devastated when they learn of the death.

Killed By Death

After flu lands Buffy in the hospital, she rescues fevered children from Der Kindestod, a demon that turned out to have killed her cousin when she was younger and which gave her a phobia of hospitals.

I Only Have Eyes for You

The Sadie Hawkins dance is approaching, but Buffy goes to the library and stops a boy from killing his girlfriend with a phantom gun. The next day, Xander is attacked by a disembodied arm in his locker, Giles sees another couple fight in exactly the same way as Buffy did — only this time the man shoots the woman — and the cafeteria is infested with snakes. The gang decides a poltergeist is to blame, and try to exorcise it, but the ghost brings on a horde of wasps. The ghost is that of a Sunnydale student who killed his lover, who was a teacher in the school, then killed himself out of guilt. Later, the ghost lures Buffy into the school, and Angelus goes to kill her; however, he becomes possessed by the teacher's personality, while Buffy becomes the boy. She shoots Angelus and he forgives Buffy / the ghost, which finally allows the ghost peace. Meanwhile, Spike has secretly recovered from his spinal injury.

Go Fish

Xander goes undercover on the Sunnydale swim team after members begin turning up dead, after apparently being skinned alive. The swim-team coach gives fish/steroid cocktails to the swim team to get them to perform, but turns them into sea monsters. Buffy confronts the coach, and he is killed by the swim-team sea monsters.

Becoming Part I

Angelus has found a demon called Acathla, who can suck the entire world into hell. We are treated to flashbacks of Angelus being sired by Darla, Angelus siring Drusilla, the curse being carried out by the gypsies, and Angel being inspired to help Buffy by Whistler, a good demon. Buffy finds the disk of Jenny's with the spell to restore Angelus' soul. Kendra returns to Sunnydale, because of a dark power that's rising; she comes bearing a sword from the knight who first defeated Acathla. Angelus tries to awaken Acathla, but he cannot, so Drusilla sends her gang to kidnap Giles to find out the way to do so. Angelus distracts Buffy, so Kendra is left alone to try and defend the gang from Dru; Dru kills Kendra. Willow is knocked into a coma, and Xander has his arm broken. Buffy returns to find Kendra's body. The police arrive, find Buffy standing over her, and attempt to arrest her.

Becoming Part II

Buffy is taken into custody, but escapes from the police and runs to the hospital to check on the others. Giles is still missing, kidnapped by Dru and Angelus. Spike is jealous of the way Dru acts around Angelus, and agrees to help Buffy kill Angelus in exchange for Spike and Dru leaving town forever. An uneasy alliance develops. Buffy finally tells Joyce she is the Slayer, and has to leave. Joyce tells her she won't let her back if she does. Buffy runs to the school to find Kendra's sword, and Snyder finds her there and expels her. She takes the sword and goes to kill Angelus. Angelus attempts to torture Giles into telling him the secret of Acathla, but only Dru's hypnotic powers can break him. Willow attempts the spell to curse Angelus with his soul again, whilst Buffy and Angelus fight. Spike takes Dru and leaves. The curse works, but only after Acathla is awakened. Seconds after his soul is returned, Buffy has to drive the sword through his heart, and send him to Hell; closing Acathla's vortex. Buffy leaves Sunnydale.
